The Property’s Story

The current owners, who live in the Blue Mountains, were seeking a weekend retreat in a milder climate they could enjoy year round and were smitten with the lovely approach along Broughton Vale Road with its causeways and bridges crossing clear, rocky creeks and the wonderful views from the property.

“We bought the property to escape the cold in Leura and be near the water, says owner. “We wanted a view but a feeling of being remote so this farm block of 7.48 acres fitted perfectly.

When it came to building their ideal weekender on the vacant block, the owners opted for an English barn style as their inspiration and purchased recycled bricks from an old woolshed in Sydney’s historic Rocks precinct in preparation for the build.

“As a builder myself I had real trouble finding someone locally with the quality I wanted, says owner. “Then I came across Strongbuild. Chris Francis and Jamie Strong understand exactly what we wanted and I calculated that using their Classic Design system would work out to be more affordable than my commuting to build the house myself and having to put up my team somewhere locally.

The house appears compact but in fact is cleverly designed to maximise living space and features 220 square metres of internal living space – up to 250 square metres including outdoor decking. Inside, there’s an open plan kitchen, dining and living space with vaulted conservatory area, bathroom and two bedrooms, while upstairs is the main loft bedroom with en suite and built-in robes. “There’s everything we need for a relaxed weekend away, far from work, says owner.

The house includes all the added extras Strongbuild have become renowned for, such as handcrafted sash windows, wide skirtings, high ceilings, quality finishes and the comfort and convenience of heated travertine bathroom floors and ducted vacuum cleaning. There’s also a large garden shed that complements the design of the house and established veggie garden.

“We come down every second weekend and for six weeks in summer, says owners. “We take our boat out and fish at Gerroa, go to the beach, take the kids kayaking in Kangaroo Valley and to the Berry markets and the ice-creamery and have lots of barbecues on the deck. My ideal lunch here is flathead I’ve caught in Gerroa that morning with salad fresh from the veggie garden and bread from the Berry Woodfired Sourdough Bakery – it’s just a fantastic meal.

The owner have so enjoyed the property they are now making a permanent home on the South Coast at nearby Bundewallah, where they have once again engaged Strongbuild to construct a larger house plus a separate cottage for their mother.
